How to set up a calm yoga space at home

You don't need a studio, a spare room or expensive equipment to practise yoga at home. A clear patch of floor and a few small decisions make the difference between a mat that gathers dust and a practice you look forward to.

Pick one spot and keep it

Choose a corner with enough room to lie down and stretch your arms out on both sides. Using the same spot each time helps your body and mind link it with slowing down, so settling in gets easier.

Clear and steady the floor

Move loose rugs and small items out of the way. On tile or marble, which can be slippery in humid weather, a non-slip mat matters more than a thick one. Carpet and wooden floors are usually comfortable with a standard mat.

Mind the light, air and noise

Natural light and fresh air make practice feel lighter. In hot weather a fan or air-conditioning helps, but avoid a strong draught directly on you during the final rest. Put your phone on silent and let the household know you will be busy for a short while.

Keep a few simple props

A mat, a folded blanket or cushion for sitting, a strap or long scarf, and a bottle of water are plenty. A sturdy chair can help with balance and seated poses.

Make it easy to start

Leave the mat rolled up where you can see it. Choose a regular time, even a quiet ten minutes, rather than waiting for the perfect hour. Starting small is how most people keep going.
